There’s an illustrated guide to bird lore and symbolism that sits propped open at the foot of our bed. Every few weeks, I flip through its pages to find and display an entry that resonates with how I’m feeling.

After our 18 year-old dog passed, the spread regarding The Kite stayed open for months. The black kite is sometimes associated with mourning, given its sorrowful call.

In January, it was The Petrel, who warns of a coming storm — a reminder to stay vigilant from the onset of the changes taking root in America.

As environmental protections and social support systems began unraveling with devastating ferocity, I thumbed to The Loon. I propped the pages wide open so I could revisit this particular bird, who some believe symbolizes a helping hand. It encouraged me to connect on another level with friends and neighbors, and to engage more fully in acts establishing community resilience.

This week, our newest rescue dog knocked the guide book from the table, where it fell to the pine floors and landed open on The Weaverbird: Creativity.
